BJP MP Manoj Kotak introduces regulatory authority bill to taboo tumultuous, abusive and vulgar content on OTT

BJP MP Manoj Kotak introduces regulatory authority bill to ban violent, abusive and vulgar content on OTT – Times of India

BJP MP Manoj Kotak introduced a private member bill in Parliament last week, proposing to band abusive and violent content on over-the-Top (OTT) platforms. Sharing details of the same on Twitter, he wrote, “Introduced a private member bill in Parliament today to establish an Over – the – Top (OTT) Platforms Regulatory Authority to ensure complete ban on showing violent, abusive and vulgar web series, films or other similar content on OTT platforms in the country.”

OTT platforms became a huge hit during the pandemic with the going to their TV sets and Tablets for entertainment when theatres were shut. Web series like ‘The Family Man’, ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’, ‘Mirzapur’ and ‘Sacred Games’ among others were a huge hit with the audience with OTT platforms renewing them for newer seasons. There was a call for censorship on OTT content with brouhaha being caused by Tabu and Ishaan Khatter sharing a kiss in ‘A Suitable Boy’ while Ali Abbas Zafar’s ‘Tandav’ also faced flak over claims of promoting anti-Hindu sentiments.

Speaking on the subject of OTT content regulation, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma had previously told ETimes, “Censorship anywhere, including on OTT, is outdated. In these times, blurring body parts or beeping words does nothing to prevent anyone from knowing what’s being censored. In fact, censorship only gives more power and attention to cuss words and the censorship of nudity only promotes body shaming. We have no good reason to hide what everyone knows and it’s absurd to continue the old practice of censorship. If we are supposed to be wise enough to vote, we also know what to watch.”
